[Women's Track & Field] Reyes (2), Goff, Schumacher, and Lysne = All-Americans

Comments

The Jimmies' Distance Medley Relay team didn't just settle for All-American honors at nationals.

On Saturday, they tacked on a school record to their ledger.

Sam Goff, Kayla Schumacher, Christa Lysne and Aleona Reyes each ran personal-bests to lead the Jimmies to a fifth-place finish, and University of Jamestown record of 12:04.88 at the NAIA national indoor meet in Geneva, Ohio.

It took a near flawless effort from all four. College of Idaho (11:41.57) and Oklahoma Baptist (11:55.37) separated from the pack, but Carroll, Mont. (11:59.94), Concordia, Ore. (12:03.38) and the Jimmies were nip and tuck to the line.

"I had not given any thought to a school record, and realistically thought getting to the finals would be a major task as we came in ranked 17th out of 19 teams with our qualifying time," Jimmie women's track coach Jim Clark said. "What it amounted to was that Samantha ran by far her two best career 1200s; Kayla ran by far her two best career 400s; Christa ran by far her two career best 800s; and Aleona ran by far her two best career 1600s.

"And all four ran faster in the finals than in the semis."

Schumacher, a Jamestown product, is the only senior among the quartet. Clark also credited men's coach Ed Crawford for his loyal work with Schumacher.

"I am most happy for Kayla. … She has worked so hard and when this opportunity arose, she jumped on it and made the most of it. It was an incredible weekend for her and her new relay pals."

Their time of 12:04.88 tied the mark of Alyssa Bossler (1200), AnnaLiesa Fauth (400), Madey Hornung (800) and Katie Conlon (1600) who posted the same time at the national indoor meet in 2010 and placed fourth.

It was the first All-American award for Goff, Schumacher and Lysne.

Reyes is up to a whopping six now between cross country and track, including her seventh-place finish in the 1,000-meter run (2:57.33) on Saturday. Her 2:56.42 in the semifinals on Friday was a PR in the race.

"Not everything went perfectly over the three days, but all of our kids competed hard and made an impact in the national meet. I could not be more pleased as we head into our outdoor season," Clark said. "I hope the kids can sit back and enjoy what they have accomplished for a couple of days before they get back out on the roads again."

Micki Glass and Taylor Brown each finished above their seed in the high jump.

Glass, a senior, and Brown, a junior, each cleared the opening height of 5-feet, 3-inches, tying for 18th overall. Glass and Brown entered seeded 25th and 26th, respectively.

"Both got over the psychological barrier of opening at a height near their lifetime best, as they both cleared 5-3 on their second attempt," Clark said. "Coach (Andrew) Gideon did a great job of helping them prepare and they jumped well. It would be hard to find two more nicer and deserving student-athletes."
